Founded at Elton School for Older Boys, Ogden Boat Race’ early psycho-velvet sound (as found on ‘Coal Tar Carbolic) was a typical recording session fortified by an array of substances. All six members of the band played guitar, relying on session musicians for drums, occasional keyboard and bugle.

At the time of releasing their sixth album ‘Talk of The Throne’, their sound and subject matter had matured, writing about subjects encompassing Gilt Edge Bonds, divorce settlements and yacht maintainance costs. Members moved to live purposefully apart from each other. They announced an end to touring with a final set onboard a chartered Concorde flight from London Heathrow to Tangier.

The band acrimoniously parted in the 1980s. Former band manager Rex Chice together with occasional session drummer Brian Standedge continue to tour under the name ‘OBR: The Rematch’, playing staunch favourites to diminishing — but nonetheless fanatic — audiences across Europe and North America.

This image was uncovered recently, originating from a reel of unlabelled 8mm cine film found in the attic of Reverand Sarah Heeley. It is thought to have been shot around 1967 by her father, the Dean of Corpus Crispin College at that time.
